Muscle is important to longevity. We need increased muscle as we age which comes with increased protein, and resistance training. Low muscle leads to rapid ageing. We also need autophagy to clean up aging cells, which we get through daily or longer fasting. So higher quality protein, timed in a way to allow for the autophagy. Fast 14 hours, work out fasted, followed by high protein. Dr. Hyman explains this in depth at hour 1.04.5 of this video. He explains well, how to build muscle through fasting and exercise, with timing and amounts.
It's a good interview altogether that covers many topics of healthy ageing, but this spot synthesized the protein/fasting questions for me.

Watching it. Loving around the 1 hour make when he talks about the power of the mind.

Thanks. Will watch today 🙂

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I found it interesting to know that he prescribed antifungal meds for some of his patients. I'm thinking that I may need to make coconut oil a staple in my diet again.

he's a wealth of knowledge. been following him awhile.

These doctors hocking this info are never muscular. That's interesting. I wonder why bodybuilders, who know the optimal way to build muscle, avoid fasting and fasted trainig. It's an inferior WoE for muscle building and an inferior method of protein timing for optimal muscle protein synthesis. 4 evenly spaced protein feedings have been shown to be optimal. Autophagy occurs in any calorie deficit.

Is fasting fine for people who need to use it as a tool to create the required calorie deficit? Sure. Is it optimal? No.

Hi Erika thanks for the update pretty interesting, always good to expand ones knowledge. I experience Autophagy through certain time periods of calorie restriction. I am currently going on one now, I eat 5 to 6 meals a day but they are small with optimum protein so that my body gets a constant supply it needs. So Autophagy can be achieved through calorie restriction as well. Think of it this way you have maximum muscle building, being in a slight surplus, or maximum fatloss being in a calorie deficit Here is some research that shows autophagy is achieved through calorie restriction. Autophagy and calorie restriction in aging by Guarente and Picard (2011). This review article discusses the evidence that calorie restriction induces autophagy and that this is one of the mechanisms by which calorie restriction extends lifespan. The Effects of Calorie Restriction on Autophagy: Role on Aging Intervention by Wei et al. (2019). This review article summarizes the research on the effects of calorie restriction on autophagy in a variety of tissues and organs. Calorie restriction enhances cell adaptation to hypoxia through Sirt1-dependent mitochondrial autophagy in mouse aged kidney by Wang et al. (2015). This study showed that calorie restriction increased autophagy in the kidneys of aged mice, which helped to protect the kidneys from damage. So Andrews model is one way which works well for you because I see you love to fast, which is fantastic. For bodybuilders and people seeking maximum muscle we achieve it through periods of calorie deficts known as cuts and then afterwards we build back up but we don't skip meals. So in short what Diablo said. How long have you been fasting for?

Ir ia not only fasting that leads to autophagy. Calories restriction that really does this work

For a regular Jane like myself I find that lifting weights in the morning after an overnight “fast” is fine, meaning I don’t eat breakfast before I lift. But trying to lift weight in the evening after a 14h fast? It can be done but my lifts will be light and easy so am I really building muscle or just burning a few extra cals to put me in a deficit?

Thank you, Wayne, Diablo, Chiara, LKL, Sfimpala, Zenus and LadyD, It's nice to hear from folks across the spectrum of approaches here on FS. We have different approaches and goals, but there's a lot to learn, and your insights are helpful. Wayne, I'll look up some of your citings; thanks! I have fasted off and on my whole adult life, but more frequently in the past couple of years.

Dr Andrew Huberman is built, and he fasts. These two guys talked over two hours and fasting was only a small part of it. The takeaway is everyone needs to increase protein intake as they age (up to 1.6 Gm per lb), and everyone needs to build muscle for longevity. When you build your meals around protein, your appetite is satisfied and you end up eating fewer calories overall. It's a challenge getting all that protein in. Eating well is becoming a hobby 😆

@Erika... are you testing ketones & BG regularly? This morning mine is BG: 93 Ketones 4.4 Dr.Boz ratio 21.13. Ketovore/IF

Yup fully agree Erika always great to hear different approaches. Keep going.

Erika my physical therapist chastised me last year for coming to pt without eating first. Big talk about protein needed to workout so body doesn’t cannibalize other parts of the body. My hubs always works out without eating first and I’ve now been conditioned to down a 30 gram protein shake prior to mine due to pt. Lecture given me. What are your thoughts?

Bodies are smart. They go after the old, disposable, recyclable proteins first, before they would resort to the drastic consequences of depleting muscle. Studies have shown, according to Jason Fung and others, that fasting (not starvation) is muscle protective. If you've got body fat to use up, your body will use it preferentially for fuel before attacking healthy muscles or other organs.
