Debbie Cousins's Journal, 04 Apr 23

Very stressful day! My daughter had an infection on the top of her foot, and the rash spread all the way up to her hip, and her foot swelled to 3x it’s size and started to split open. She went to the hospital. It’s cellulitis/staph infection, but they said in 12-24 hours it could have turned to sepsis. They prescribed an antibiotic, a cream, and a pain pill. The antibiotic and an anxiety med weren’t going to be ready by closing time at 8 so I had them transfer them to a 24-hr cvs so we could go pick it up for her tonight. The anti-itch cream and pain meds require pre-authorization, so who knows when she’ll get those. She’s miserable. I have the kids. The 12-year old grand daughter is being an Angel. The 7-year-old grandson FAR from it! So unlike him! He’s usually very good for me, but he wouldn’t do anything I told him to do (mostly things to STOP doing. He’s finally asleep.

one tip i learned with Head Start as a teacher when kids are being oppositional : "you can do this or this. which is better for you?" like when my toddler doesnt wanna get dressed for school "you can put on your shirt first or your pants on first, what is better for you?" both options are in my favor but that freedom to choose is powerful. or a kid keeps climbing on furniture "you can keep your feet on the floor or sit in a chair with me. which is better for you?" Totally guessing here- your grandson may have been scared for his mom but may not have been able to vocalize it, instead of being able to express it, he started acting up. At school, one boy was kinda a terror and i sat him in my lap ond got him calm"whats going on?" he said he missed his mom and start crying. hope this helps!

Oh my goodness. Very scary. I hope she gets better soon. You are a wonderful mother and grandmother.

Dazey, Great reminder! My very strong willed & independent children and grandchildren required that method. So true kids feel our stress and don't understand what is happening. Also frequently lack the ability to tell us what is upsetting them. Prayers for healing and peace for all.

Hmm. I’m surprised she wasn’t admitted for at least 24 hours worth of IV antibiotics. Oral antibiotics don’t really kick in for 24-36 hours.

Sorry for her discomfort. I'm with Kenna. That situation seems like it needs constant professional care and observation.
