Debbie Cousins's Journal, 19 Jun 23

My birthday is tomorrow. I’ll be 69. I LOVE German Chocolate Cake with Coconut-Pecan Frosting on the top, sides, and between the layers of the cake! There’s nowhere I can buy just a slice of that cake. One slice (1/12th of a 2-layer cake) is 405 calories. The local specialty bakery sells just such a cake at Kroger, and they are supposed to be getting in two of them before opening tomorrow at 7am. If I get it, I WILL eat half of that cake (at best, over the next six days). That’s over 2,400 calories - but it takes about 3,000 excess calories to create one pound of weight gain. Should I indulge? For SIX days? (Having one slice and freezing the rest is not an option - I have been known to eat frozen cake!). Ok, you’ve got until 7am EDT on 6/20 to “weigh in” with your opinion. I really could go either way at this moment.

The impulsive me says go for it. The practical me says invite 11 neighbours/family for cake or deliver to their doorsteps. Happy Happy Birthday (in advance)

How about asking the bakery for 1 German Chocolate Coconut Pecan Frosting cupcake? Something special just for you on your special day! Happy Birthday Debbie

PattiOB, good suggestion, but individuals can’t buy from the bakery - only stores can. And, I really don’t like cupcakes

Annisworkingonit, all my friends and family are diabetic. Go figure! BUT, I could possibly package some up to give out at church on Wednesday morning. I would, at the very least, want two pieces; but that’s a LOT “better” than six! Worth considering. Thanks!

Happy birthday! Do share the same concern as PattiOB, though. If you have diabetes, this half-cake plan sounds like too much.

My daughter says, “Life is short. You’re going to die anyway. Eat the cake.” True. This could be my LAST birthday. Surely they have German Chocolate Cake in Heaven, though, right?!

You've lost over 65 pounds!! You are amazing! 2400 calories adds up to .68 pounds. Maybe just this week you can walk an extra 30 minutes a day and cut a couple hundred calories somewhere else? I rarely have desserts these days, but when I do, I allow myself to enjoy it and use that as motivation to burn more calories by getting outside. HAPPY Birthday!!

That's just the sort of thing that sets me off track and it takes me a month to get a hold of myself. There are a lot of great keto cheesecake recipes out there. something like that might be easier to recoup from.

First of all, Happy Birthday Debbie! 🎉🎈. I would recommend definitely celebrating with that ONE slice only and gifting the rest. Enjoy that one slice very slowly after a glass of water first. It's your birthday and you should feel good and happy celebrating it. Eating that whole cake will make you upset with yourself after which contradicts how you should feel on your birthday. It seems wasteful initially to pay that much money for one slice, but I would gladly pay $30 to not gain another pound or avoid the need to reduce my calories and do exercise for the WHOLE week for that ONE pound. Good luck!

Im with Erika. I cant ever have just one of anything that is unhealthy for me but i love anyway. My new motto (provided by hubs) is that I have had enough ice cream to last a lifetime. That extra 2400 calories could just as easily be nearly 1 pound lost. I have worked really hard to break my sugar addiction but know it is just lurking around the corner trying to bribe me into indulging my way back to obesity and immobility. I think you are a wonderful, loving person who has worked really hard so only you can answer the question of whether it is right for you. Look at where your goals are and ask yourself if this one day is worth it. Happy birthday to you!🎂

Happy Birthday :)

athalia5 - good insight. Eating six slices of cake may very well make me NOT feel good about myself. erikahollister, I’ve definitely been there, but it’s even taken me up to a YEAR to recover. Easier to get back on tract after one day than after six. JoeScuba - I usually have 2-3 pieces of a KitKat bar and 1 or 2 Keebler Fudge Duo cookies each day. Perhaps I could eliminate those if I opt for the cake. Can’t really exercise more - already walking five miles a day and doing over an hour and a half of pre-surgery PT exercises. Thank you all for the birthday wishes and the advice.

Eat as much cake as you will enjoy without stuffing yourself on your birthday. Throw away what you dont eat on your birthday the next day.

It is your birthday, have some cake. But, share the cake with your friends and neighbors so that you don't feel like you need to eat all that yourself. Share a smile.

I love it too. Always had it for my birthday.

As I posted earlier, I went out to celebrate Father's Day last night at a nice restaurant and we ordered 2 desserts for our fam of 5 to share. I had half of the creme brulee and 2 bites of the very dense mocha mousse. Part of me at that time justified it by saying 1) Hey, it's Father's Day, gotta celebrate AND 2) It's pricey, so not gonna waste it. After logging in all that I had that evening, I was shocked it was more calories than what I thought. I didn't drink any alcohol and yet today it's like a hangover. I feel regret I put my guard down a bit and this week I have to work even harder than I have been these past weeks. It's a wake up call and I wish I passed on the desserts. It takes soooo much work and extra time to rectify those excess calories and for me, it's not worth it. Hope this reflection and perspective helps.

Happy Birthday! I would eat some everyday then throw the rest out if you don't have someone to share with. But split it right away so you aren't tempted. Your birthday only comes once a year. As long as you don't find rationalizations to continue eating more extra calories down the road you'll be ok. But if it's too strong of a trigger and will cause you to binge, then put off the indulgence until you reach your goal weight or your next weight goal and indulge yourself in some other non food way. Most of all enjoy yourself!!! 🎈

happy birthday what ever you decide

Whiskerscat, I think I would have a REALLY HARD time throwing away perfectly delicious cake.

Ok ok ok. Im going to revise my earlier opinion. DONT DO IT!!! Will taste good for 5-10 minutes and take so much longer to get the weight off. That’s my honest opinion. When you hit goal weight maybe re-evaluate. It just comes on so fast and leaves so slow
