Debbie Cousins's Journal, 23 Sep 22

Yesterday's calories ended up being only 1,353 because when I woke up in the night (when I usually eat my Dave's Killer Good Seed bread toasted with butter) my knee was hurting so badly that I could hardly walk to the bathroom, much less the kitchen to prepare it. This is the first time I've skipped my middle-of-the-night snack since I started this diet 13 weeks ago!

I have a new plan regarding the pancakes. I made the plan last night after talking more with my CA friend. I decided that if I have several ultra-low calorie days (being less than 1,400), I would allow myself to have the pancakes and syrup. It will make me to over for that one day, but my weekly average for RDI will still be in the 1,500's or 1,600's. So, I started last night, and I haven't had any snack-size candy today (I've been having 50-230 calories a day in candy). I'm going to try to do that same thing, and omit the midnight snack today, tomorrow and Sunday. If I have the Pecan Pancakes tomorrow, the calories for that one day will be 2,186, but the average over the week will be less than 1,600.

Another reason I'm allowing myself to have the pancakes is that I am in excruciating pain. Doing all that laundry and walking up and down the stairs totally wrecked my right knee. When I woke up in the middle of the night, I had to take 3" steps to make it to the bathroom (NOT in time!) When I woke up this morning at 4:45, I stood up from the bed, but could not take a single step because of the knee pain. I can't put any weight on it. I had to wake my husband up and he stood in front of me and had me hold onto his shoulders to be able to walk to the bathroom and then to my recliner. Then, he went over to the church and brought a WALKER for me to be able to inch my way through the house. I cannot walk at all without it. Thank God I'm only temporarily handicapped!

My husband has been very good to me today, going to the kitchen every time I needed a drink, putting away the dishes I washed yesterday, going to the grocery store for me, and cooking my butter beans to have for dinner tonight! He's a very good man, and he has really stepped up to the plate. My knee was a Level 7 pain this morning. With pain pills and diclofenac cream, the pain is only down to a five, if I am NOT walking on it.

This morning, I actually OD'd on pain meds. I took two of the Tizanidine instead of just one prescribed every 8 hours. I got so dizzy I could not stand up, and my vision became very blurry, like I wasn't wearing my glasses, and was looking at a jigsaw puzzle. I went back to bed for an hour and a half, and felt okay when I woke up at 9:30, praise the Lord. Lesson learned.

Oh, I've been drinking only Diet Coke today, but for a very good reason. When I drink water, I have to pee much more frequently than when I drink Diet Coke. Every trip to the bathroom is painful today, and it will probably be even more so in the middle of the night tonight. When I only drank Diet Coke, I would wake up one or two times during the night. With drinking at least 8 cups of water a day, I have to get up to pee 4-5 times a night - every 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 hours! Can't torture myself with that tonight.

That's my Woe Is Me story for the day. Tomorrow, the Pecan Pancakes will magically cure my knee! Or at least my stomach will be extremely happy.

Enjoy the pancakes! you deserve them! And I hope you feel better soon. Put some ice wrapped in something on your knee, it may help with the pain.

I agree, elevate it and put ice on it.

Thanks for the suggestions, @nosequepongo and @shirfleur 1. I propped my knee up on a big pillow for at least five hours yesterday. Started doing it today around 6:30am, so I'll get even more elevation time in. It really seems to have helped yesterday. I don't think I can put ice on it. I actually switched to a long-sleeved pajama top this morning because it was only 49 degrees outside. Plus, even though ice is good for inflammation, it feels like it's hurting it worse when it's on. I could tolerate heat, but that would be counter-productive.

Debbie, have you tried frankincense oil for your knee? I have a friend that has arthritis in her knees and she uses the oil liberally and it helps amazingly with the inflammation. I also use a mixture of peppermint oil (pain) and wintergreen oil (inflammation) 25 drops each in a small spray bottle. I use it on my neck & shoulder muscles. I have used that spray on my husband's arthritic knee and he says it helps too.

Thanks for the suggestions, @AllyJF. No, I haven't tried either of those remedies. If this problem persists, I may have to give them a try.

Oh my goodness, so sorry your knees are so bad. I think I will buy some peppermint, wintergreen, and frankincense oils for my back, hip, and leg with sciatica. I use Papa & Barkley CBD Releaf Balm when I go to bed but haven't been using it during the day because it is so expensive. Yesterday I finally went to a chiropractor and go back in a week, but no difference yet. I can't bear ice either. Hope you get to feeling better.

Can really relate to your knee pain. And that you find your own solution soon. My MD specialist told me Motrin and ice (i use frozen peas) 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
