Debbie Cousins's Journal, 01 Jun 23

For 218 days, I have been walking every day. I started at just a mile a day, and had to walk in 1/10-mile increments because I would get so winded. Now, (for the past 6 days), I am up to walking 5 miles a day in 1-mile increments. It still takes me almost a half hour to walk each mile. My question is this: after 218 days of consistent walking, would you say I am "disciplined?" I still feel like it is only by the grace of God that my lazy, UNdisciplined self is able to accomplish this.

Yes, your walking is due to discipline and I heartily congratulate you on it. But it is the grace of God also. I can lose my discipline easily, usually by giving myself an excuse like "just this once..." Also, we can exercise discipline in one area and not in another, as you know. So I am proud of you for all your walking, but if we don't throw ourselves on the mercy of the Lord, it can slip away quickly. I've seen that just this week with desserts. We are so human!

Good on you! It is a goal of mine to be able to walk that far with my dogs. I'm sure they'd love it.

Many things are happening because of your faith. Along with your discipline to see the greater good down the road. So many won't sacrifice their now so that their future could be better. That's the biggest and most difficult part of this. There's no immediate results shown on the surface when you commit to bettering your health. But a lot is going on underneath the skin and inside. Let's just say those are all good ingredients you're instilling in yourself daily by doing the small things. Small improvements make large additions over time. Keep at it you're doing amazing.

I believe that it takes 90 days to start a habit, 180 days to start a routine and 365 days to establish a “must do as part of my day”. You have the routine and God bless you for getting to 5 miles a day. One mile is going to turn into 1.25 at a time and 1.5 and so on. You are amazing!!! It’s tough to push thru physical limitations. Good job for requiring this of yourself. I had no idea that just walking would help my lungs and weight loss. I was just trying to get my hip working again and lo and behold it gave both benefits. Im a true convert. If you cannot run (like myself) walk. Good job Debbie!!!!!

Absolutely it’s both! The grace of God AND your discipline and yieldedness. I need to be like you!! I can discipline my eating most days…..but exercise? Ugh. I walked .25 mile on treadmill and that’s the first I’ve exercised on purpose in months!🙄 You actually spend almost 2.5 hours walking each day?! I can’t fathom how I could do that. I’ve got too much else to do, lol. You are a real inspiration.

@lastisbest, I’m blessed to not have to work outside the home, so I have plenty of time to get in the 2-1/2 hours of walking and an hour and a half of PT exercises to prepare for my upcoming total knee replacement. Congratulations on getting on the treadmill!!! Just do that 1/4 a mile every day until it becomes easy and then increase to 1/2 mile until you can do more.
